Contains approximately 600 handwritten letters of a family who were among the early white settlers in California. Most of
the correspondence is addressed to Martha "Mattie" Moad (neé Martin) from husbands, friends, and other family members. One
folder of later correspondence (1957) is addressed to Moad's daughter, Pauline Rosen (neé Moad, 1867-1964), mostly concerning
the death of her husband, John Jacob Rosen (1867-1959). Many of the letters include their original mailing envelopes. Also
includes a small amount of Martin family genealogy information and miscellaneous ephemera items such as wedding announcements,
funeral notices, calling cards, clippings, etc.

Martha Hayden Martin (born September 18, 1847 in Illinois ; died April 14, 1935 in Los Angeles, California) was married twice.
Her first marriage was to John Nelson Moad (1852-1885) on November 15, 1874 in Woodland, California. Following Moad's death,
she married Marshall Frederick Price (1834 or 1835-1919) on February 3, 1887 in Stanislaus County, California.
